Lesson planning
10 Dec 2021, 14:12
All lessons should be planned in order to achieve the objectives of the lesson. Music lessons and activities are also planned in order for the lessons to be a success. Shortly I will be sharing things a teacher should keep in mind when planning a music lesson or activity.
Ensure that you play music at the beginning and at the end of a lesson.
Never play music (YouTube or recordings) without a specific aim.
Any music that is
listened to in the class must contribute towards reaching the lesson aims. Tell
learners what they must listen for or what they must do while listening when playing
a song in class.
Be a facillitator, guide learners in music listening – give learners specific criteria,
explain on which music elements learners must focus on, movement activities to
carry out at end/during or give answers to questions during the music listening
activity.
Use different kinds of teaching and learning assessment activities in your
lesson.
plan more in your lessons, your lessons must not only be based on learners
listening to music, playing on istruments and only listening to what the teacher says.
Use different activities. Explore techniques in art and music.
Use the basic and simple Introduction to Teaching and learning phase to Conclusion
building in mind as this will help you in the process of teaching and learning
activities that advance from lower to higher-order cognitive thinking.
Allow learners to make understanding of new vocabulary and skills on their own
before you as the teacher could give them answers to questions asked.give them
group works so tat they learn from one another and be independent.
Think the types and approaches of assessment that you will use for all learning
activities in the lesson.continious assesment must be implemented.
Music play in the foundation phase
8 Dec 2021, 13:40
What is play?
Play is engagement in a specific activity for enjoyment and recreation.
The purpose of play -
Play is important for development because it contributes to the cognitive, physical social and emotional well-being of children.
Different levels of play
1.solitary play
-this is the type of play in which children play without regard for what other children around them are doing.
2. On looker play
-type of play whereby a child who is playing alone continuesly observes those playing in the same area.
3.parallel play
-play in which numerous children are playing.
4.associative play
-play in which several children play together but in loosely organized way.
5. Cooperative play
-play in which each child accepts a designated role and is dependent on others for achievement.
In the foundation phase learners are bound to participate in play and this helps them have opportunities to master various intellectual, physical and social skills and concepts.
Listening to and responding to music

Music elements
Music elements are the building blocks in music through combining the different elements we can create music.
Music elements
The basic elements of music are:
• duration (of tone) – including music concepts of beat, meter, rhythm and tempo
• pitch (of tone)
• intensity (of tone)
• quality (of tone)
• Texture
Duration (of tone)
Duration of tone refers to the length in time of a sound. Some sounds can be long/sustained while others are short/quick. Concepts such as beat, accent, note values, meter, rhythm, and tempo involve duration.
2.PITCH
Pitch means high or low.
3. INTENSITY
The intensity of tone refers to the dynamics, in other words, how loud or soft a tone is.
4.
QUALITY
Every instrument has a unique sound which is characteristic of that instrument. This is called the tone quality. If you close your eyes and someone plays the piano, you immediately know it is a piano because of its unique tone quality.
5. TEXTURE
Texture refers to the thickness or thinness of sound. When you listen to your favourite song, there are a lot of instruments playing at the same time, we then say the texture is thick. When you sing to yourself in your room, it is only your voice that is heard, so the texture is thin.
ARTS INTERGRATION
3 Oct 2021, 21:26
Arts integration is an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form.students engage in a creative process which connects an art form and another subject area and meets evolving objectives in both (silverstein&layne 2010) .Arts integration is important in the foundation phase as it allows learners to experience how to deal with real world challenges. learners develop problem solving skills .Arts integration strategies provides learners the opportunity to learn in a way which priorities critical understanding of of new terminology and skills on a practical level before introducing abstract symbols.Arts integration also supports academic achievements and socialisation among learners.

study unit 1 has been educative and interesting as i have learned the importance of music in foundation phase. i have learned music helps learners develop physically, cognitive, emotional, socially& personally.music activities such as dancing and playing instruments promotes physical development. i have learner that when learners dance to music they develop balance ,coordination ,gross motor skills and body awareness. music strengthen learners attention and gives them the ability to multitask.learners learn how to work together and build friendships.
