8 Dec 2021, 05:19
There are certain aspects you should keep in mind when planning foundation phase lessons like:
- make sure that you have all the material aids you need for that certain leasson
- always make sure that your planning of a lesson is relevant to the age group that you will be teaching
- Find a way to keep your learners focused
- make your lesson fun and entertaining, not forgetting that it has to be educational
for your lesson to be a success you have to make sure that you include teacher activities, learner activities, and assessment to make sure that whatever it is that you were teaching was a success. You must make sure that you integrate arts and play very well in your lesson because it is what broadens a learner's critical thinking and give them a sense of understanding that will make them realize their potential.

Arts integration is an approach to teaching in which learners constructs and demonstrate their level of understanding through art formation. In a way art becomes the medium of the teaching and learning process, it helps teachers get their roles in order and the relationship they have with their learners. In foundation phase, arts integration is very important because it always learners to be creative with what they are being taught and what they have learnt. It develops their level of understanding as it reveals the potential that learners have, and once learners are aware of their potential they become eager to learn more and enhance their skills. A teacher can be able to tell which of her students are struggling and be able to help them better their skills and help them understand better using art.
Study unit 3: Musical play in the foundation phase
8 Dec 2021, 04:14
In this study unit we learn how important musical play is, in the foundation phase because it provides opportunities for children to make sense of their own world and it helps them process things they have heard and sang along to. It makes it easier for learners to remember things and they become actively involved in a play, and that shows that they enjoy what they are learning. Children play involves a lot of music, it gives learners a chance to explore sounds, to sing along and even dance to the music and that is what develops children musicality. Children are able to recognize their talents, some can know how to play instruments, others can see that they are gifted vocally and they can interpret environmental sounds. Musical play makes learners understand rhythm, tempo, melody and dynamics on a deeper depth because there is no play without those elements they are the core elements of musical play. musical play sets the foundation for the development of critical social and emotional knowledge and skills. Through play, children learn to create connections with their peers. They learn how important it is to share, work as a team without having conflicts or find ways to deal with conflict. Play also teaches children leadership as well as group skills.

Music is very important, and it is very essential as a foundation phase teacher to include it when teaching your learners. Children from a young age love sounds so teaching and learning process become a success when music is integrated in learning because it makes it much easier for them to remember the content that is being taught through music. Music activities helps children enhance most of their skills. Skills like motor coordination, thinking abilities, language and understanding emotions. There are so many ways that you can use as a foundation phase teacher to incorporate music in your class. You must make sure that you use music to establish positive learning, that way you will be creating the right atmosphere for your learners to learn while having fun. You will also be inspiring them to release their body energy because they will doing body percussion activities and keeping their focus on music.
Holistic development is very important especially when music is involved because it is the main key to successful learning especially in the early years of childhood. It develops motor skills of learners, social skills, emotional understanding , intellectual capacity and spiritual beliefs. When teaching music you must make sure that that you include all basic music concepts because the are the one that determines how learners responds to music. Duration, pitch, intensity, quality and texture are the basic music concepts that helps learners relate to music and be bale to understand music.
STUDY UNIT 1
25 Aug 2021, 03:42
Hello guys my name is Patricia Mmusi and I would like to share my piece about what I learnt in study unit 1 that is based on music and holistic development.
In this study unit I have learnt about the 3 theories which is Erikson's theory, Piaget theory and Vygotsky's theory. As a foundation teacher i have to outline the important aspects of each theory so that i can know how to apply them when I'm in practice.
Erikson's psychosocial theory it focuses creation of relationships and the influence that social interactions have on a child's development. As a foundation phase teacher I have to make sure that my learners have relationships with each other because they can learn many things from their peers, that way i will be making sure that they gain social experiences and develop their growth and will they be able to adapt to changes they might face as life goes on. This will help them with making friends and be able to build relationships that are actually beneficial to their lives. It also advisable for me as a teacher to have a relationship with my learners so that they can be comfortable enough to ask about anything and make this whole teaching and learning process more easy because if learners feel safe and support they will obviously enjoy learning.
Piaget's cognitive development theory it focuses on allowing learners to add up new information to the information they already know. Children acquire new skills by enhancing the skills the already have, and foundation phase learners falls under two stages pre-operational stage and concrete operational stage. Under pre-operational skills learners are able to use symbols and words to represent the objects they know which they might have learnt at home and in concrete operational stage learners develop problem solving skills and they become aware of their own thoughts. As a foundation phase teacher I must keep in mind that children think differently from adults and I must make sure that I give them tasks that are going to help develop their problem solving skills, let them explore and learn new things. And I also have to teach them discipline and respecting each others' opinions.
Vygotsky's developmental theory focuses on social cultural factors as well as the social environment that contributes towards a child's development. As a foundation phase teacher it is important to make sure that I check a child's social environment and help them find comfortability in a way they want to learn because learners comes from different backgrounds. Vygotsky's zone of proximal development it aims at informing us about the importance of social interaction and the way it influences learners' language development. it allows learners to interact with their peers from different cultures and backgrounds without any difficulties and they get to work together towards achieving common goals.
The importance of music in foundation phase.
Music is very important in foundation phase because it make learning fun and learners become active and engages in class. Learners gets to have skills of playing music instruments and explore their musical talents such and dancing and singing. They can be able to read music and help them with their motor coordination. It increases a learner's creativity and they get to see what their can and cannot do. The way learners pays attention in class will change because music will keep them focused and they will listen attentively, then the lesson outcomes will be achieved 100%. Children will improve their vocabulary through a sense of melody, rhythm , pulse and tempo. They get to remember what they learnt in a song faster because sounds cannot be forgotten easily.
