what are the most important aspects to keep in mind when planning foundation phase lessons?

the most important aspects to keep in mind as a teacher would be to know your learners, know the ability levels, their backgrounds , their interests levels , their ability to work well in a group , special needs or accommodations and learning preferences.

Things to be included in the lesson plans

1.learning outcomes

2. Objectives

3.Teaching Aids

4.The stages of the lesson: the warm up, presentation , practice .

5. Evaluation

6. Timing

What is your opinion about the value of utilising arts integration and play in foundation phase lessons?

Arts and integration is a strong teaching strategy. Teachers use singing , dancing , plays and storytelling to aid in teaching academic subjects and the results are always, joyful and active learning.

1.Arts integration develops cognitive skills

2.  It builds social and emotional skills

3. It supports health and wellness

4. Utilising the arts when teaching provides deeper learning for all students

Yes my perception has changed but for the better I understand that music makes everything easier and when included in teaching and learning learners become more active and joyful and they understand more of the content and they find it easier to learn.

SU4:Arts Integration Applied

3 Oct 2021, 20:41 Publicly Viewable

Arts integration- is one of the most effective ways for a wide range of students with a wide range of interests, aptitudes, styles and experience to form a community of active learners taking responsibility for and ownership of their own learning.

Arts integration is an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an ART Form.

When we choose to apply arts integration principles in the foundation phase , we need to  engage learners in teaching and learning activities which encourage them to draw on their prior knowledge with the aim of discovering new concepts and skills and to demonstrate their understanding in a practical way through the arts. ( Silverstein and Layne, 2010). Learners can therefore illustrate how music makes them feel by writing it down or by drawing a picture.

Value of arts integration

a).gives learners the prospect to collaborate in teaching and learning activities which are fun.

b).promotes children’s inborn curiosity, creativity and imaginative capabilities.

c). Gives teachers the chance to promote and  support their learners developmental needs.

d). Schools that encourage teachers to use arts integration tactics in their classrooms have seen increased math scores and fewer disciplinary issues.

e). Through participation in authentic learning activities, foundation phase learners will improve their problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Strategies for integrating music with other subjects

  • Play a song and ask learners to choreograph a dance which shows meaning of the song .
  • when working with concepts such as rotation and revolution, learners can demonstrate their understanding of these concepts through movement.
  • concepts such as vibration and sound waves can be explained and demonstrated by looking at the ways in which instruments produce sounds . You  can  also put a glass of water close to ( in front or on top of ) a speaker and play  low or loud sounds to show learners how water moves due to sound waves.
