The tax on sugar has been mentioned by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as a measure to combat the issue of diabetes. This was in line with the World Health Organisation's recommendation to countries to curb the excessive intake of sugar. A study that was conducted by Plos Medicine indicated that the overall sales of sugar beverages dropped by 9.6%. So will the introduction to sugar tax improve the health prospects of the citizens of Singapore or will it prove to be non-effective. It has also been proven the there are certain substances in the white rice (a staple food in Singapore) that are linked with diabetes as well, which also raises the question whether it too will be taxed.
