Introduction |
Fluid mechanics is the engineering science in which the kinematics and dynamics of fluids are studied. The term ‘fluids’ is the collective noun for fluids and gasses. Mechanics involves the study of the physical characteristics, speed, accelerations, pressures, stresses and the resulting forces. The mechanics of fluids is thus the engineering science in which the physical characteristics, speed, accelerations, pressures, stresses and the resulting forces associated with fluids are studied.
This second module concentrates more on the advanced aspects of this subject area. It includes compressible flow, boundary-layer theory and measuring techniques.
The practical applications of fluid mechanics is wide ranging and includes among others aircraft propulsion, the stability and buoyancy of ships and submarines, numerical simulation of flow fields, physical model tests, wind resistance of cars, aircraft and projectiles, as well as the flow through nozzles and pipe networks.

Introductory Remarks |
The year 2020 and 2021 had definitely taken some interesting twists and turns and no one knows this better than you who already received classes in the first semester via the new mode of online efundi. This subject was presented in the for 8 years via the normal lecture mode. However, the twists and turns of the last two years have led us to eFundi.
For this year we will have a flipped classroom approach. The theory will be made available on efundi, whilst the tutorial session will be in person.
I hope that every student will give their utmost best to understand this subject. I furthermore hope that no one will find themselves lost in the twists and turns of this new way of learning.
