AK QHEKWANE
This has been a very tough week for me but the struggles that I faced didn't stop me from doing my work. I made sure that I read every single day.
I learned some interesting new things from study unit one which is more based on music and holistic development. Music refers to voices or instrumental sounds or both combined in such a way that it produces beauty, harmony and emotional expression. Holistic development is a comprehensive learning method designed to develop multiple aspects or abilities of the human brain. From the study unit, I learnt that it is important for learners to experience music activities in order to promote their holistic development. There are different types of holistic development namely, physical, cognitive, emotional, social and personal development. Activities that can promote a child's physical development include dancing or playing instruments. Dancing enables learners to develop balance, body awareness as well as co-ordination. Music education improves learner's creativity and betters their Maths skills.
Therefore in order to have creative and lively learners and also enjoy your classroom lessons teach your learners music, you can start your lesson by asking them to sing a song just to grab their attention and allow them to sing as loud as they want.

I am Boitumelo Kgosiemang. I'm from Klerksdorp (jouberton)
I want to become a foundation phase teacher because I think I have ability to change the quality of education, change lives of learners from early age and their mindsets.
I am excited and looking forward to learning and gaining more skills on LSKM 221 this semester.
I am passionate about dealing with learners with different learning styles and how they learn from music.
My expectations this semester is to understand, master all study units and be able to pass with good mark
Arts integration in foundation?
It helps learners in foundation phase to illustrate how music makes them feel by drawing a picture or writing a story.
-learners can also internalize new knowledge and skills buy engaging in authentic activities which have real life value.
What I found interesting?
-it's knowing the value of arts integration on how it contributes towards higher motivation levels amongst learners.
-The ideas for music integration
What I found challenging?
-Theoretical framework for arts integration in foundation phases is its aspects as they can be confusing and challenging.

In this study unit I have learned that music is a vocal or instrumental sound that produces harmony and expression of emotions. It is the art of combining sounds through the elements of rhythm and melody. I also learned about the various musical concepts which are pulse, dynamics, tempo and timbre to name a few.
I also learned that music is important in the foundation phase because it boosts learners moods, helps learner's cognitive development and allows learners to express themselves. It also improves their vocabulary through nursery rhythms.
Holistic development is the areas of a child that are ignited by music. These areas are physical, social, emotional, spiritual, language, cognitive and personal development.
Then there was the three theories which are Erikson's development theory which draws focus to the influence of social interaction and relationships on learning, Piaget's development theory with the notion that children learn by interacting with the world and Vygotsky's development theory which draws attention on the socio-cultural factors that influence cognitive development.
I am looking forward to learning more and looking forward to study unit 2.

Music play is the free choice, enjoyment, self-motivation, and a focus on process rather than product characterize play. Throughout life, creative activity and fun are widely recognized as important aspect of the creative process.
Play is thought to be beneficial to children’s cognitive development, particularly their ability to think creatively and solve problems.
LEARNING AND PLAYING MUSIC REINFORCES THE FOLLOWING:
Passion music encourages children to express themselves more clearly by allowing them to connect with their emotions.
Determination being able to perfect a tricky piece of music gives learners a sense of accomplishment and motivates them to take more difficult challenges.
Increased coordination playing and dancing to music helps children improve their motor abilities.
Social skills making music with others (in a band or choir, for example) helps children develop social and emotional abilities.

In study unit 1 the most interesting part i learned is about 3 Learning Theories.
1.Erickson stages of psychosocial development.
(From age of 5-11 children develop sense of pride).
2.Piaget cognitive development theory.
(Children learn by interacting with the world they live in and they build new knowledge based on the existing skills and knowledge they already have)
3.Vigotsky and the zone of proximal development
(Focus on socio cultural factors that influence cognitive development)
I am looking forward to this interesting module that teaches me about child's development and music.

Arts integration in the foundation phase
I would like to define what art integration is, arts integration is an approach to teaching in which learners construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form. Students engage in a creative process which connects an art form and another subject area and meets evolving objectives in both.
The following are ways to integrate art in a classroom:

Musical play in the foundation phase
In this study unit we will be looking at the effect or the importance of musical play in foundation phase. The importance of learning music from a young age has been compared to acquiring the skills of reading and writing. Many experts in the field of child development agree that learning how to play music is as important. Learning music stimulates a child’s cognitive development.
Learning and playing music inspires a sense of:

This study give me a different perspective of being a teacher including ways to deliver a contend. I was introduced to music concepts, i know that music ignites all areas of child development and skills for school readiness, including intellectual, social-emotional, motor, language, and overall literacy. It helps the body and the mind work together. Exposing children to music during early development helps them learn the sounds and meanings of words.
Mathematics: musical elements such as steady beat, rhythm, melody, and tempo possess inher- ent mathematical principles such as spatial properties, sequencing, counting, patterning, and one-to-one correspondence. Using musical activities to teach math will make learning more appealing and enjoyable for kids, and at the same time, it will improve their creative thinking and innovation. It can also help introverted and insecure kids come out of their shell.
Language: Music can help kids to retain words and expressions much more effectively. The rhythm of the music, as well as the repetitive patterns within the song, help kids memorize words. Bilingual children, in particular, can benefit from singing songs in their second language.

I recently developed more interest on this study unit (SU 1) because i realize not does it only teaches me but prepares me as the future teacher about my learners, the holistic development of a learner using music. Musical play helps all children to make sense of sounds, sensations, sights, smells and tactile feelings. It can help children process more positive feelings about themselves and about learning when positive suggestions or experiences are provided through the use of the elements of music and specific music activities (rocking, singing, beating a rhythm, etc.). Music making helps children to communicate without the need to use language. It allows them to enjoy success because there is no 'right' or 'wrong' in music. They can have fun, problem solve (e.g. how to produce different sounds by tapping different objects), and anticipate (e.g., as they hear where the music is "going" in a familiar song or a new cadence). Through special songs, they can prepare for situations that they may find difficult or anxiety provoking, such as putting on clothes in the right order or preparing to get into the car. Through a range of simple songs that simply "sing the sequence" of actions that are to be done, a child can learn self-help and safety skills and perform tasks such as washing, dressing, or undressing or following routines such as stopping with a parent, or watching and waiting to cross the road.

I am feeling devastated,my week was slightly rough in general. Not having data and having work to complete in time was the reason for having a bad week.
In this study unit i have learned that teaching music in the foundation phase supports, motivates and promote learning. It also help with the child's whole development which include physical, social, personal, emotional, and cognitive.
The benefits of participating in music activities :
Physical development - when children dance to music, they develop balance, coordination skills, gross motor skills.
Cognitive development- when they make their own instrument they think creatively and develop thinking skills
Social development - they get social interaction skills when they they make music with their peers.
Personal development - they gain confidence.
Emotional development - they learn how to express the emotions provoked by music, and how to manage their emotions.
There are theories of development that i came across while studying:
Erikson's stage of phychosocial development theory - it focuses on how children interact with others and relationship on learning.
Piaget cognitive development theory - it focuses on how children instill new knowledge on what they already know or what they have experienced.
Vygotsky and the zone of proximal development theory - it focuses on how children interact in their environment.

After analyzing study unit 1 which focuses on holistic development and music, I have learned that Holistic development is an approach to learning that highlights the importance of the physical, emotional and psychological well being of children, particularly in early childhood. It helps children to fasten with the world around them. As I continued reading i also realized that Holistic learning allows children to develop strong internal values and confidence, because their whole being is considered during the learning process.
Music development in early age helps children learn literacy, numeracy and emotional skills as they listen to or creating music. Melody erupt all the zones of a child development and skills for readiness including intellectual and social - emotional. Uncover nor exposing music to children at an early development helps them learn sound and meanings.
In Holistic development we have three learning theories namely: Erikson's stage of psychological development, which draws the focus on to the influence of social interaction and relationships on learning. We also have Piaget cognitive development theory and Vygotsky and the zone of proximal development.

I have been good. My problem has been time management but fortunately I managed to tackle it and I managed to go through or to study SU1.
I have learned that holistic development is about the development of a learner/a child. This includes, Physical development, cognitive development, emotional development, personal and social development.
Music is a very crucial instrument/tool to utilize in a foundation phase because learners concentrate more. It also increase ability to demonstrate whatever is taught.

Music related to math
- Math and music have a direct relationship that goes back years and years to the origin of music and civilazation. musicians and mathematicians both use patterns. music and math have the closest connection because they both use patterns, choruses and portions of songs have been reviewed in music and mathematical pattern are utilized to to explain and anticipate the unknown. And you can study everything in music from different mathematical perspective, geometry, number theory, trigonometry, various calculus, and signal processing are all covered.
The frequency of sounds has a mathematical relationship. different weights and vibrations can be used to create different sounds. this led to the realization that the length of vibrating strings, such as violin, guitar, or piano, can regulates its pitch. the higher the pitch, the shorter the string, and the lower the pitch , the longer the string thrower.
Music related to life skills
- Music is a unique kind of expression that has the ability to affect how people feel, think, and act. music brings intellectual and emotional elements together, allowing for personal expression, introspection, and emotional development. Dancing to music helps children develop motor skills while allowing them to express themselves. music also aids memory in both children and adults. music study necessitate discipline, hard work, and creativity. Music enables students to express themselves creatively while also improving their life skills.
Music and language
- music and language are linked in so many ways, its vital to classify some of them. grammar and vocabulary are aided by music. it is also widely believed that those who learn a musical instrument at a young age find it easier to master a second language later in life. you can listen to music while also hearing the language. Our brains processing of language and music is far more intricate than simply detecting words or sounds; it is extremely complex and utilize similar brain functions. Teachers believe that the development of cognitive and social skills through singing and dancing may have led to the development of language. Language and music both involves a series of sounds that might be interpreted as correct or incorrect. Different notes make up music, and letters or symbol are frequently used to form word in language. Language can be learned through listening to music and language of music contains rules, or syntax, similar to written and spoken language. Music is a fantastic instrument for learning languages.
