Welcome to LPRA 211!

We look forward to working with you this semester.

In this module, you will be introduced to some of the linguistic theories which contributed to the development of translation studies. These theories will provide you with the tools and skills you will need to identify potential translation problems and to solve these problems with well-reasoned, well-motivated translation solutions.

Before we kick off this module, it is important that we just get some of the practical issues out of the way. The first is that LPRA111 and LPRA122 are prerequisites for LPRA211. This means that if you have not passed both these modules, you cannot be registered for LPRA211.

The second is that classes for LPRA211 will be conducted physically. You are encouraged, to go through the time table and note down the venue for your class. To access the time table, please go to the Student Academic Lifecycle Administration pages, then select the tab on Time tables and Assessment, then you click on the class timetable, lastly you click on the timetable of your own campus.  You are therefore requested to make use of the time table and note that punctuality is important. 

The ‘classes’ for this module are scheduled for Mondays 07:30-09:15 and Thursdays 14:30-15:45. Your lecturers will let you know what they expect from you bright and early each Monday morning.

Should you have any questions about what is expected of you (or even if you have any remaining questions from the previous week), you will be able to ask them during this consultation session. Afterwards, you will have to complete all the reading and exercises required of you that week before our contact session on Thursday. Here, you will have the opportunity to virtually consult with your lecturer. During this contact session, you can ask your lecturer any questions you may have.

MC, PC and VC students are sharing a single eFundi site for LPRA211. The lecturers from each campus (Makoetja, Thabo and Ntshwaki) will be taking responsibility for different study units. However, you can always ask any one of us for help or information :)

To help you familiarise yourself with how things will work in this module, we have created a syllabus page.  Please go through the syllabus page during our first week of class. We will commence with Study unit 1 as from the 20th of February 2023.
