S U 2 Listening to and responding to music

For me music ignites all area of child development and skills for school readiness, including intellectual, motor, language, social-emotional and overall literacy. It helps the body and mind to work together. Dancing to songs during gumboots dance helps children build motor skills while allowing them to practice self- expression. Counting stomps and clapping is interacting with mathematics. Sing songs improves your speech and language development.

 Body percussion: It is producing sounds by using your body, through hand clapping, thigh-slapping, stomping, finger-snapping, inhaled and exhaled air. Traditionally the four main body percussion sounds: 1. Stomp: Striking left, right, or both feet against the floor or other resonant surface 2. Patsch: Patting either the left, right, or both thighs with hands; or patting cheeks 3. Clapping hands together 4. Snapping fingers

These activities also provide opportunities to foster learners’ concentration skills, creativity and improvisational skills as they can create their own body percussion patterns and write them down using iconic notation

coordination, balance and visual-spatial awareness. When learners are able to successfully participate in body percussion activities, they experience personal development by gaining confidence, becoming self-aware, experiencing a sense of achievement, pride and learning discipline

Dear future teachers as for this LSKM module I am so proud to be part of 2021 2nd semester as I have learnt so much about music, a source of life. My reflections are self esteem and confidence that groom me to work together in a group of different levels in my studies. I was able to engaged with my peers not physically but through zoom meeting, whatsapps, emails and phone calls. I shall forever cherish the fact that we were able to make musical instruments from recycling material and choose a song to merge in our instruments from different provinces.

In life never ever procrastinate, rather work under pressure whether load shedding or without data. Music brought a sense of belong, love and respect to my peers and I. For me music is a global language that is spoken, it releases stress, teaches discipline and responsibility.

Togetherness made us to form a family bond (NWU LSKM). Even though there were challenges, we did managed to over come them, as I am one of those students who lost my love ones but my peers were there for me through thick and thin that I move with the group in the same pace by holding my hands all the time.  

I have learnt that if you need help ask, and do not shy away. For me I shall instill and share with other teachers from different schools the importance of integrating music in Art, Math, Life skills and Language. Using music in daily routine.

I wish all the students good luck, good health and NEVER stop learning.

COLLABORATIVE REFLECTION

  1. We need each other as this is a group work.
  2. Our timing as we stay far apart but with technology we could work together on specific time in our whatsapp group to accommodate each member
  3. It was interesting as we are from different cultures we end up embracing each other.
  4. With group work as distance student my wish was to meet as a group face to face to discuss openly.

This is a matter of each one teach one, being in a diverse classroom with multiracial learners we must learn and embrace each others’ culture. S.A is a rainbow nation as I shall accommodating all learners.

We shall practice both Western and African music and sing along and dance along. I shall use the rubric for assessing learners which will include (movement, sounds, flexibility, body language) ranging from 1 low 2 average 3 good.

ART INTEGRATION

Arts integration has been proven to contribute towards higher motivation levels among learners and supports academic achievement and socialisation among learners. Schools that encourage teachers to apply arts integration strategies in their teaching have shown improved results with regards to learners’ mathematic performance as well as decreased disciplinary challenges.

When learners are encouraged to demonstrate their understanding through the arts, we create teaching and learning environments in which individual learning needs and abilities are met. Through the application of arts integration teaching strategies, we design teaching and learning activities which are inclusive and provide multiple means of engaging with and internalising new knowledge and skills (accommodate various learning styles and preferences

Ultimately, through arts integration, foundation phase learners will develop their problem solving and critical thinking skills through engagement in authentic learning activities which foster the ability to become aware of the various ways in which we are not only connected to each other but our world while drawing attention to the ways in which the various subjects in our curriculum are connected. This is especially appropriate in the foundation phase as the CAPS is also written in a way which encourages teachers to draw links between various subjects by integrating various subjects

There is nothing I can change unless all resources that I needed are there, and my wish is that the department of education must subsidize all school with the whole band and orchestra equipment and teachers should go for training unfortunately it will not happen.

Fond memories

  • It was really engaging our teacher was part of us, she was us, from the beginning to the end of the period we could sing during religious education praising the Lord in all ways. During mathematics we could integrate the numbers by singing showing four fingers when we count number 4. During Health education we integrate 1, 2 buckle my shoe bending down tying our shoe laces as part of the body exercise while singing and saying words in a proper pronunciation, that was also language learning.

  • Never there was no dull moments as I shall go home singing what we were singing at school, the share with my family and friends that is why we never used calculators, as my teacher will drill us in mental maths there was no way you could not get the total mark for the speed test as I sleep what I learnt, eat it, bath it, to stay in my mind forever.

  • Excitement over and over again, it was happening as I was hungry for education.

  • There is no way I could change music education, I grow up with it. It is part of my life the thing is technology has taking over, I used manmade musical instruments, like a drum of paraffin for drum and motor oil container for the guitar. It was happening I was never lazy. Nowadays we buy.

 What  is arts integration: Arts integration promotes teaching and learning methods which address outcomes in various subjects ( learning areas concomitantly (at the same time) while motivating learners to show case  their understanding of concepts and skills through the arts. It is also one of the most effective ways for a range of experiences, styles, interests and  aptitudes to form a community of active learners taking for and ownership of their own learning.

It is vital that all teachers become aware of the successes that have been demonstrated when when learners become engaged in their own learning via arts integrated instruction. It connect to other curriculum learning areas.
