MARISKA OOSTHUIZEN VAN TONDER

Hi my name is Mariska Oosthuizen-van Tonder
(yes, the first question is usually why the double barrel surname? It is my legal surname, my maiden and husbands surname combined but you are welcome to only use van Tonder)
I am a professional nurse, since 2011, specialized in Psychiatric Nursing Science. I enjoy teaching students and helping them to grow into professional nurses.
Week 4 reflection
8 Jun 2020, 13:23
I am excited as I realized that this is only the beginning of a journey as a online facilitator. Even though I am "technology efficient" there is still a lot to learn and develop on. This week has made me realize that there is always room to grow and that I need to enroll in more courses like this to grow.
I enjoyed planning an online activity and the structure that were provided really helped a lot.
Thank you for enabling us in this course (for all the fellow course colleagues and the facilitators that played a big role)
Week 3 - Weaving
29 May 2020, 23:28
Weaving, a new concept for me was a bit more challenging as I initially forgot to acknowledge participants by naming them and had to go back and repost it. The weaving however reminded me of identifying themes in qualitative research as described by Cresswell. I applied the same principles and it kind of made sense, I however think that it would be a good idea to let someone validate/check it with you if possible, in the case of a facilitator and co-facilitator. I also now now that one should be vary in using summarizing online as it may cause the discussion to stop
Week 2 - Facilitating
14 May 2020, 19:52
I enjoyed this week as it was more practical for me as we got to work with simulated experiences and apply the knowledge more.
- On thinking on what stage our current students are
- On resolving a conflict situation
- And experiencing the difficulties of working in an online group if you do not know the group members (it was difficult to contact all members in time and to get feedback from them) as we only looked at this activity by Wednesday.
Two different facilitating strategies that I found useful was
- To make rules and set clear limits in the beginning of the course. When done later it may be frowned upon. It is needed that the facilitator takes a authoritative role in the beginning of the course.
- The other strategy that is helpful is to get to know your community.
The implications of the strategies are;
If you set clear limits in the beginning and take an authoritative role it may avoid conflict situations that may emerge. If you get to know your community you are in a better position to anticipate their needs and their morale. You would be better able to support and motivate them where needed. If you know your online community you can identify emerging leaders and coach and mentor them.
My learning Blog - Mariska

I started this course yesterday, all excited to learn more about online learning
Now in day 2 the excitement is still there but I have more questions now and make mental notes of things to remember. One of which is the learning model levels. Level 2 the conversing level is a level that I would have seen as "a waste of time" and would not have thought to include it in my module. But doing the week 0 activities I actually had fun yesterday and feel more at ease on this platform. Its a feeling of familiarity. I think students would not see conversing (getting to know each other) as a waste of time but that it would deepen their learning experience.
