Hi my name is Lèhandri Oelofsen. Blogging is a first for me so please bear with me. I live in Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape and is a distant student. I love to work with smaller children, because they are inquisitive and it is amazing to see them learn and grow. Actually I have more than one passion, one is to become a good teacher and then I love the farm life. I am farming with pigs I am really excited to learn about LSKM this semester as all children loves music and like to move. At the end of this semester I hope that I will be able to present a good music lesson and to incorporate music in an class enviroment.

Goeie dag mede Bloggers!
Sjoe wat 'n besige tyd wat ons agter die rug het. Maar die einde is in sig!
Waar begin ek? Persoonlik het ek hierdie module geniet en vreeslik baie geleer. In die begin was "blogging" iets nuut en het ek nogal bietjie bang gevoel. Ek dink nog steeds nie ek het dit onder die knie nie. Alhoewel dit 'n heel prettige ondervinding was het nog heelwat om te leer.
Ek het hierdie semester geleer dat musiek 'n integrale deel vorm van ons dag tot dag bestaan, hetsy in die klas of in jou persoonlike omgewing en het weereens besef dat 'n liefde vir musiek gekweek word terwyl jy nog jonk is. Aangesien die kurrikulum vandag nie veel voorsiening maak vir die onderrig van musiek nie maar eerder vir liggaamlike oefening, voel ek tog ons kan musiek op verskeie maniere in die klas inbring. Daarom sal ek regtig moeite doen om eendag musiek in my lesplanne in te bring. Ek het dit geniet om die verskillende take te doen en so geleer dat kinders baie makliker leer deur speletjies en hoe hul dit geniet. Verskillende musiek intrumente wat geidentifiseer is (sommiges waarvan ek voorheen nie van geweet het nie) . Baie belangrik was om te leer hoe musiek 'n rol in die holistiese ontwikkeling van kinders speel en die aktiwiteite wat ons kan onderrig om dit te bevorder.
Ek is nog skrikkerig om musiek aan te bied in 'n multikultureule klas. Maar werk sterk daaraan.
My opinie van hierdie module is dat dit regtig elke faset dek en dit is baie goed aangebied. Daar is nie iets wat ek sou verander nie. Die inligting en bronnes is baie volledig en so uiteengesit dat ons dit kan verstaan.

Ek hoop almal is nog gesond. Sjoe ek sien uit na ons kort week vakansie. Tussen die skool, toetse, take en buitemuurse aktiwiteite gaan dit nog lekker rof!
Op die vraag of kuns intergrasie 'n mors van tyd in die Grondslagfase is, stem ek glad nie saam nie. Dit help juis vir leerders wat nie akademies presteer nie, maar wat homself kan uitleef in drama of musiek. Ons het 'n leerder wat geweldig hakkel, maar wanneer hy op die verhoog is en opvoer, sal mens nooit sê hy hakkel nie! Verder bevorder dit die ontwikkeling van kreatiewe probleemoplossing vaardighede, motoriese vaardighege taalvaardigheid, en sosiale vaardighede asook besluitneming vermoë. Kinders leer van uitleg, perspektief, balans en kleur en moeilike konsepte kan visueel voorgestel word wat dit makliker maak om te verstaan bv. Wiskunde. Kinders leer ook meer oor hul eie kultuur sowel as die van ander. Ek glo ook dat kinders selfvertroue ontwikkel en glo in hul eie vermoë en dit geniet om op die maat van musiek te dans.
Wat was interresant en hoekom
Vir my was die rol wat kuns intergrasie speel in die holistiese ontwikkeling van die kind en hoe multikulturele klasse veral hierby baatvind. Die voorbeelde en strategië wat as voorbeelde gegee word sal ek ook eendag in my eie klas gebruik. Dit het my geleer van diversiteit in die klaskamer.
Wat was vir my uitdaging
Alhoewel Eenheid 4 baie insiggewend is, het die teoretiese raamwerk van musiek my nogal bietjie ondergekry aangesien ek nie die konsepte verstaan het nie. Maar na bietjie naslaanwerk, dink ek ek het dit onder die knie.

Musical play in the foundation phase

Good day everyone
Hope you all are well and safe. This week was a tough one with all the tests and assignments which have to be submitted. And then we also had a few staff members which have been tested positive with COVID19. So rough week at school as well.
But on a positive note, studying Unit 3 this week was so interesting as at some schools there are not music teaching at all. So Life Skills is just another academic subject without any fun! Discovering the different games that can be taught, the elements of play and genres and the part it played in the holistic development of a child.
What possibly made some learners uncomfortable during these activities?
Learners comes from different backgrounds and and are used to their own traditions, culture and believes. They are not so involved with learning from other cultures until entering the foundation phase. Some of them were uncomfortable with the Zulu song, as they do not understand the language nor the game.
Why where some learners uncomfortable?
Certain children are more self-conscious and shy. They will need more encouragement to act in front of other children. Some learners may feel the are belittled to dance in front o boys as it is not part of their culture. Some genres of music are not aloud to be played or listen to because of their believes or church.
What will you change in future?
The choice of music should allow for the inclusion of all learners. My suggestion is that when a song is presented in another language or a game, there an explanation of what the song/game is about. Learners can be asked is they are comfortable with it. If learners are uncomfortable, make sure there is another activity which they can complete. With dance items, learners can also be divided in groups of boys and girls separately. In general boys are more likely to participate in activities and more spontaneous.
How can we accommodate diverse learner profiles in your classroom?
Make sure of all your learners cultures and traditions in the beginning of a year and that learners understand everyone is unique. Cultivate respect for each other. Include all learners to make sure no one feel left behind. Don't discriminate!

SU 2 Listening to and responding to music

- As a Foundation Phase teacher, you have to choose between utilising indigenous African music, Western Art music or contemporary commercial music (including popular music and film music) in your classes. Which would you choose? Please motivate your answer.
Through music everyone is equal. Children loves to move, sing along and dance to the music they hear. I would choose contemporary commercial music as this type op music is well known to especially the young. They can identify with the music because they hear it on a variety of platforms and because they heard it before it would make them more comfortable and encourage participation.
2. Do you think that the examples and content offered in SU 2 are inclusive? Please motivate your answer.
Working through this study unit I have learnt a lot about music and the role it play in the holistic development of the learner. Even though it is well presented, i feel it could include more languages.
- What suggestions do you have for making the content more inclusive? Please provide examples of how the content and activities presented in SU 2 could be changed or adapted to be more inclusive. I would like to see more examples for grade 2 and 3 to be included.
